Does Your Sewer Main Need To Be Repaired Or Replaced?
The last thing we want to hear is that our sewer main needs to be repaired or replaced. It usually starts when the drains are moving slowly throughout the house, and you can smell the sewage. In many cases, your sewer main may only need to be cleared. At Big B's Plumbing, we do a complete video inspection that will expose a full view of the obstruction or break. Sewer main repairs usually occur in homes twenty years or older, but tree roots can invade the smallest opening in a sewer main regardless of the age of the house. Once tree roots have invaded your pipes, they feed off of raw sewage and multiply quickly.
The Toughest Obstructions May Be The Problem
When your Big B's Plumber has identified the blockage and it is not due to tree roots, they have two ways of addressing the problem. The first way is the plumber's auger also known as a snake. The auger is a thick flexible metal wire with coils. At the end of the snake is a hex-shaped tip that can be changed based on the kind of obstruction. The snake is sent down the pipe while a motor is continuously rotating, breaking up the blockage. The second method is to apply hydro jets. A hydro-jetting machine is a sophisticated gas-powered drain cleaner that moves through the toughest obstructions. The procedure requires inserting a hose down the drain with a patented nozzle at the end. It will inject water into the pipe at 4000 pounds per inch clearing everything in its path while leaving your pipes sparkling clean.
Trenchless Sewer Main Repair
If the obstruction is due to tree roots, hydro-jetting will clear the roots. Even still the core problem will always exist, which is the tree roots. While this method will remove any blockage and clean the drain, the problem will come back over time. The permanent solution with tree roots is a trenchless sewer line. The procedure is accomplished by inserting a resin-saturated polyester felt tube down the sewer main and pulling it into place. It then hardens inside your old sewer line creating a resin lining. The trenchless sewer line is seamless, corrosion-resistant, and can last up to fifty years or longer.
