No One Likes A Pushy Plumber. In fact, no one likes a pushy salesperson. I told a story a while back about a guy that came to fix our refrigerator. He never removed anything, just stuck his hand in the refrigerator and told us we need a complete rebuild. At that point, what can you say? I know nothing about refrigerators. He was a fast talker, threw out all the big words he wanted us to hear. I wasn’t impressed, but I told him to do it. It would be a couple days to get the parts. I couldn’t sleep all night thinking about it.
The next morning I called the company and told them to hold off. I scheduled a second opinion from a different company. A technician came out and took some things apart to examine the unit. He said, “You have a broken fan motor.” Cost of a new fan motor $250 versus $2500 for a rebuild.
A Pushy Plumber Will Try And Upsell
We need to be on our guard every day. Some plumbing companies train their plumbers to upsell their customers. They get paid based on the job, not an hourly wage. What you end up with is a pushy plumber, one that would rather sell you a new water heater then fix your current one. If your water heater is more than eight years old, it may need replacing. On the other hand, it may only need repair. At Big B’s Plumbing, we train our plumbers to give our customers all their options.
Don’t be pushed into anything.
Get a second estimate.
Estimates should be FREE, whether they do the job or not.
Stay in charge even in the case of a plumbing emergency. Get more than one estimate.
Ask to speak to a supervisor if you’re uncomfortable with your plumber.
Don’t let money be the deciding factor.
You won’t need a second estimate for every plumbing problem. For example, in the case of clogged drain, or installing a faucet, choose someone you’re comfortable with. For those larger plumbing jobs such as a water heater repair, slab leak, clogged sewer line or a complete home repiping, get more than one estimate. Unless you have a background in plumbing, you’ll never know if the diagnosis is correct.
