What You Need To Know Before Hiring A Plumber

Whether we like it or not, at some point in time, we’ll need to hire a plumber. Don’t just roll the dice when you need to hire a plumber or any tradesman or woman.  Whether in person or over the phone, have a checklist of questions for that plumbing company.

Do You Provide Free Estimates?

Make sure that “free” means “free.” In most cases, a plumbing company will say “free,” but in reality, it’s only “free” if they get the job. Some companies give estimates over the phone while others choose not to. It’s always best to allow your plumber to come to your home and provide an accurate estimate.

When does your plumber want payment?

If you have a plumber that wants any form of payment before the job is complete, move on. Your plumber is compensated when the job is complete. An exception is a kitchen or bathroom remodel, and that’s all negotiated before the job starts.

Do You Charge By The Hour Or Flat Rate?

Either one is fine but if your plumber is hourly and the job drags on, you could be holding the bag. If your plumber charges a flat rate, you’ll know exactly what you’re paying up front, and if the job goes over, then it’s on them.

Does Your Plumber Guarantee Parts and Labor?

Ask your plumber or plumbing company if they guarantee parts and labor for work completed. Know what the guarantee is on labor and what your warranty is on parts, such as a water heater or water pressure valve.

Does Your Plumber Have A Contractor’s License?

Ask your plumbing company if they are a California licensed plumbing contractor. Get their contractor’s license number and run a check on their license before any work is performed. Any licensed contractor with a perfect record will appreciate you asking. The Contractors State License Board (CSLB) will provide a wealth of information in less than a minute.  The CSLB can tell you if your plumbing company is licensed, bonded and insured. Big B’s Plumbing number is #986152.

Ask Your Plumbing Company If They Have Military or Senior Discounts

If you’ve served our country then ask for a discount on your plumbing services, you deserve it. If you’re a senior citizen, ask for a senior citizen’s discount.

Do You Have First Time Customer Discounts or Coupons?

Everyone wants to save money. Most plumbing companies provide coupons and discounts for first-time customer discounts. If you don’t ask, they won’t tell.
