Trenchless Sewer Line Repair: Pipe Bursting Demonstrates Exceptional Efficacy

Pipe bursting is an advanced trenchless sewer repair technique where the technician inserts a new pipe into the old one. When inserted into the existing one, the old pipe is simultaneously fractured and displaced. This method minimizes the need for extensive excavation; they only require small access points at either end of the pipeline. It's an attractive option for homeowners seeking to maintain the integrity of their landscaping and minimize disruption during repairs. Pipe bursting demonstrates exceptional efficacy, especially when dealing with pipes constructed from materials such as cast iron or clay. These pipes are susceptible to fracturing under pressure.

The pipe bursting method focuses on efficiency by conducting all necessary work from access points at each end. This eliminates the need for extensive excavation. Instead of inserting a new pipe within the existing one, pipe bursting fractures the old pipe and replaces it with a new one.

What are The Benefits?

  1. Trenchless sewer line repair revolutionizes underground utility repair by reducing the need for extensive digging and preserving landscapes. This innovative approach streamlines the repair process and promotes environmental sustainability by minimizing the disturbance to surrounding ecosystems and infrastructure.
  2. Trenchless technology accelerates project completion, surpassing the timelines typically associated with traditional methods, allowing for quicker restoration of essential services. Its efficiency saves time and reduces overall project costs, making it an optimal choice for infrastructure maintenance and rehabilitation.
  3. Trenchless sewer line repair provides a prolonged lifespan for the newly installed pipes, exceeding the durability of those repaired through conventional techniques, thus providing long-term reliability and peace of mind for property owners.

What are The Drawbacks?

While offering remarkable advantages, it's worth noting that pipe bursting may entail some disadvantages.

  1. Replacing the old pipe with trenchless methods might not be feasible in certain situations. This could be due to the presence of nearby utilities that require protection.
  2. The pipe is too severely damaged and corroded for trenchless techniques to be effective—slightly higher costs than other trenchless alternatives, primarily due to the specialized equipment involved.
  3. Typically, the cost associated with pipe bursting may exceed that of other methods. However, it's essential to recognize that pipe bursting offers ease of operation; it's important to consider the associated expenses. You must evaluate whether it aligns with your budgetary considerations. By weighing these factors thoughtfully, you can make an informed decision.

Nonetheless, when considering its overall benefits and efficiency, the investment in pipe-bursting technology proves to be highly rewarding in many scenarios.

Pipe Bursting: Trenchless Sewer Line Repair is a Basic Three Part Process

Step 1: Preparation and Setup

To kick off a pipe bursting project for house-to-main lateral lines, we create two pits – one serving as the pulling pit and the other as the insertion pit, positioned at each end of the section requiring repair. In the pulling pit, a sturdy steel cable is carefully threaded through the old pipe, extending all the way to the insertion pit. Once reaching the insertion pit, the bursting head and HDPE pipe are securely connected to the end of the cable, ensuring a seamless setup for the operation.

Step 2: Pipe Bursting

We initiated the next phase with our precision winch system, which was expertly installed in the pulling pit. The winch efficiently pulls the cone-shaped bursting head and HDPE pipe through the old pipe. As this process unfolds, the bursting head diligently fractures and clears the old pipe, paving a smooth path for the trailing HDPE pipe. Continuously advancing, the bursting head and HDPE pipe steadily progress until reaching the pulling pit, marking a significant milestone in the seamless replacement process.

Step 3: Reconnections

Upon the successful installation of the new HDPE pipe, our skilled technicians proceed to reconnect each end to the existing plumbing infrastructure, securing them in place to prevent any water infiltration. In instances where the HDPE pipe obstructed a lateral line, our proficient team employs the leak-proof fusion technique to meticulously assemble and join the mainline back to the corresponding laterals. Following the reconnections, a comprehensive final inspection may be conducted to confirm the unequivocal success of the project, ensuring the utmost satisfaction and reliability for our valued customers.

What is Trenchless Pipe Lining?

Pipe lining stands as an ideal solution for repairing underground pipes, preserving their integrity rather than resorting to complete replacement. Following a thorough camera inspection to pinpoint leaks or damaged sections of the sewer line, our skilled technicians will strategically dig two small access points and cut into the sewer line at these sites. Subsequently, a cable is carefully threaded through the pipe, facilitating the insertion of a pipe liner. Once properly positioned, our technicians inflate the lining and utilize heat or UV light to cure it. Upon removal of the cable, the durable liner remains within the line, ensuring a reliable inner pipe that will serve for decades to come, enhancing the longevity and functionality of your sewer system.

Potential Cost Savings:

Opting for trenchless sewer line repair/replacement often leads to significantly lower costs compared to traditional methods, primarily due to reduced labor requirements. With trenchless repair, there's no need for extensive digging machinery or the laborious process of backfilling around the repaired line. While there are cases where the cost may match or slightly exceed that of traditional methods, it's important to consider the overall savings in time and property restoration efforts, as trenchless repair minimizes damage and disruption.

Accelerated Project Completion:

Traditional sewer line replacement can be a lengthy process, sometimes spanning over a week due to the extensive digging involved. In contrast, trenchless methods streamline the process significantly. With only two access holes to dig and the option to run a new pipe or construct one using epoxy, trenchless repairs can often be completed in a day. This rapid turnaround time minimizes inconvenience for homeowners and allows for swift restoration of sewer services.

Reduced Disruption:

Excavating an old sewer line entails substantial disruption, potentially requiring street closures and interrupting sewer services for an extended period. In contrast, a trenchless sewer line repair minimizes property and community disruption. With fewer trenches and reduced reliance on heavy equipment, trenchless methods offer a more convenient and less intrusive solution. Homeowners can avoid the inconvenience of prolonged disruption to essential services, making trenchless repair a preferable option for many.

Durable and Long-Lasting:

Trenchless sewer line repair materials will endure for 50 to 100 years—equivalent to the lifespan of traditional repairs. Beyond the immediate cost savings, homeowners can expect long-term financial benefits from the repair's durability. With minimal maintenance requirements and a prolonged lifespan, trenchless repairs offer immediate and ongoing savings, ensuring peace of mind for years to come.

Trenchless Sewer Line Repairs: 3-Part Pipe Lining Process

Step 1: Cleaning

The trenchless pipe lining process begins with proper surface preparation, just like any other process involving the use of epoxy or polymer resins. We often use a combination of techniques to remove scale buildup, and restore the pipe as close to its original diameter as possible. These cleaning techniques consist of hydro-jetting or a dry-mechanical method that involves spinning chains to remove calcified deposits, scale, and rust.

Step 2: Lining

After preparing the pipe and drying it to the extent necessary, the lining process begins:

  1. The structural felt liner and other materials are measured and cut to match the pipe's length.
  2. The resin, usually a two-part epoxy, we mix it and add to the liner. The liner is then "wet out" or pressed to ensure complete saturation with the resin.
  3. We pull the liner into place from a second access point, such as a cleanout.

The technician increases air pressure, inflating the liner to take the shape of the host pipe. The liner is then left to ambient cure. We expedite the curing process via the use of steam or specialized UV equipment.

Step 3: Robotic Branch Reinstatements

Once the resin has cured and the liner has hardened, we remove the inflatable bladder from the pipe, leaving the customer with a new sewer line.

What People Are Saying...

I called Big B's Plumbing because I the hot water would not turn off in our master bathroom. I tried to turn the valve off under the sink and it broke off, so I had to shut off the main water to the house. It was noticeable the valves were original to the home. When I called, the rep stated that I would be informed about the service tech and their experience along with services offered "On The Spot". I was on a bit of a time crunch...

Found them on Google and they had good quality reviews. Made the call and set up the appointment for same day. Dispatch called me a few hours later to confirm our appointment and let me know that the technician Mathew was on the way. This was supposed to be an easy job once Mathew arrived. But it turned out to be so much more than that. Without hesitation or a sour look on his face, he dove deep into his van...
