What Causes Low Water Pressure And How Do We Fix It?

At Big B's Plumbing, we're your Murrieta and Temecula low water pressure repair specialists. Nothing is more irritating than taking a shower or even watering your lawn with low pressure. Many of us might say, "Why worry? We're in a drought." The fact is, we may be using more water to accomplish our task. What's the cause of low water pressure, and how do we get it fixed? There are many reasons why we have low water pressure in our homes. Our highly trained plumbing experts can identify the cause faster than you would have thought possible. Below are some issues that can cause low water pressure:

  • Particles or debris in your water lines
  • Mineral deposits that build in the lines
  • A faulty regulator
  • Faulty water valve
  • Whole house water filters
  • Water Leak
  • Municipal water district
  • Peak period water usage

The Two Questions You Need To Ask Yourself About Low Water Pressure

Here are a couple of questions you need to ask yourself: Where does the low water pressure occur? Is it throughout the home, or is it isolated to one area? For example, if the water pressure only exists in the shower, it may be as simple as buying a new showerhead or scraping off the calcium buildup on the old showerhead. You can also soak your showerhead overnight in vinegar; this will easily remove the calcium deposits. We also perform low water pressure repairs in Menifee, Sun City, San Jacinto, Lake Elsinore, and surrounding areas in the Inland Empire.

You're Not Compromising On A Great Shower By Using Low Flow Shower Heads

We would advise replacing your old showerhead with a new low-flow water-saving showerhead. The latest technologies in low-flow showerheads can save on water without giving up any benefits of a good shower experience. Not that long ago, showerheads delivered 5 to 8 gallons of water a minute. Today's current standard is 2.5 gallons per minute.

Is The Water Pressure Low Throughout Your Home, Or Is It Isolated To One Area?

When the water pressure is low throughout the home, you may want to look at the home's water shut-off valve because it may be partially closed. Even if the shut-off valve is slightly closed off, it will cause low water pressure. A homeowner can easily check their water pressure by purchasing a water pressure gauge. The cost is around ten dollars. You can attach the gauge to an outdoor spigot, laundry sink, or washer hook-up. The correct water pressure for any home is between 40 and 60 PSI. Above 80 is considered high water pressure and is against city code. High water pressure is detrimental to your home's plumbing system and appliances. A water leak is another reason your water pressure could be low. Checking for a water leak is a breeze for most homeowners.

How To Check For A Water Leak

1. Make sure all the water is turned off in the house.

2. Go to your water meter located in the front yard. It's usually close to the street.

3. Watch carefully at the leak indicator. It's either a small spinning dial or a triangularly shaped dial.

4. If the dial is spinning, you have a water leak somewhere in your plumbing system.

Make A More Detailed Check

1. Have a pencil and notepad handy so you can take a meter reading and write down the numbers.

2. Wait for half an hour, and take another reading. If the numbers increase, you have a water leak in your plumbing system or irrigation.

3. Once you know there's a leak, turn off the main irrigation shut-off valve. You can usually find the shut-off valve in the front yard, garage, or near your outdoor faucet.

4. Once you shut off the irrigation and the water is still shut off in the house, recheck your water meter. If there is no movement in your meter reading, your leak is coming from your outside irrigation. If there is movement, the leak is in the house.

The Leading Cause Of Low Water Pressure Is Your Water Pressure Regulator

The leading cause of low water pressure is your water pressure regulator. Locate the regulator. It's usually in the home's front yard by the hose connection or in the garage. In most cases, you can find it by drawing a straight line from the water meter to the house. The manufacturers typically preset the regulator. It's not uncommon for them to need adjusting. Like all appliances, fixtures, and even pipes, there are those regulators that can go bad before their time. The average life expectancy of a pressure regulator is 10-15 years. An experienced plumber from Big B's Plumbing can correctly set your pressure regulator or install a new one. We're your Temecula and Murrieta low water pressure repair specialists.

Construction In The Area Could Be The Problem

Some low water pressure problems are as simple as construction projects in the area. Sometimes, you can check with a neighbor to see if they're having the same problem. If they are, call your local water company to get an update on construction in or around the neighborhood.

Calcium And Mineral Concentrations Can Build Up In Your Pipes, Creating Low Water Pressure

Everyone knows California is notorious for hard water. Over many years of water flowing through your pipes, calcium and mineral concentrations can build up, causing them to restrict, leading to low water pressure. Our copper pipes have a life expectancy of 40 to 50 years; if the water pressure is restricted, your pipes may need replacing. At Big B's Plumbing, we're your Temecula and Murrieta low water pressure repair specialists.

What People Are Saying...

I called Big B's Plumbing because I the hot water would not turn off in our master bathroom. I tried to turn the valve off under the sink and it broke off, so I had to shut off the main water to the house. It was noticeable the valves were original to the home. When I called, the rep stated that I would be informed about the service tech and their experience along with services offered "On The Spot". I was on a bit of a time crunch...

Found them on Google and they had good quality reviews. Made the call and set up the appointment for same day. Dispatch called me a few hours later to confirm our appointment and let me know that the technician Mathew was on the way. This was supposed to be an easy job once Mathew arrived. But it turned out to be so much more than that. Without hesitation or a sour look on his face, he dove deep into his van...
