I think by now, we’ve heard it a million times, “Going green.” Just what does it mean to “Go Green?” Well, here’s one definition that best describes “Going green” “to make more environmentally friendly choices such as recycle, reduce, reuse.” In years past, “Going Green” meant a considerable expense though not so any longer. Installing green products has proven to lower utility costs in the long run, as well as improve our environment. For example, our home plumbing system covers a wide range of green products such as water heaters, toilets, showerheads, faucets, and garbage disposals.

Your Water Heater Is A Great Place To Start When “Going Green”

If we’re realistic with ourselves, we can’t go out and order a new water heater. For many of us, it is outside the budget. However, at some point, every water heater will need replacing, and when it does, you’ll be empowered to do your research and select a new eco-friendly one.

Navian Tankless Water Heater for going green

Technology:

  • Old Inefficient Water Heaters: Traditional water heaters typically use a storage tank to heat and store water continuously, regardless of the demand. They rely on a heating element, such as a gas burner or electric resistance coils, to heat the water to a predetermined temperature.
  • Energy-Efficient Eco-Friendly Heaters: Modern eco-friendly water heaters utilize advanced technologies such as tankless (on-demand) or heat pump systems. Tankless heaters heat water directly as it flows through the unit, eliminating the need for storage. Heat pump heaters extract heat from the air or ground and transfer it to the water.

Energy Efficiency:

  • Old Inefficient Water Heaters: Traditional heaters often suffer from standby heat loss, where heat escapes from the storage tank, leading to wasted energy. Additionally, they may lack proper insulation, causing more heat loss. Overall, their energy efficiency is relatively low.
  • Energy-Efficient Eco-Friendly Heaters: Eco-friendly heaters are designed to be highly energy-efficient. Tankless heaters only heat water when needed, eliminating standby heat loss. Heat pump heaters use significantly less energy by transferring heat rather than generating it directly. These technologies can provide energy savings of up to 30-50% compared to older models.

Environmental Impact:

  • Old Inefficient Water Heaters: Traditional water heaters consume more energy and contribute to higher greenhouse gas emissions. Gas-powered heaters release carbon dioxide and other pollutants during combustion. Electric heaters indirectly contribute to emissions through the power plants generating electricity.
  • Energy-Efficient Eco-Friendly Heaters: Eco-friendly heaters help reduce the environmental impact significantly. Tankless heaters and heat pump systems consume less energy, lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Heat pump heaters, in particular, extract heat from renewable sources like the air or ground, further reducing their carbon footprint.

Cost-Effectiveness:

  • Old Inefficient Water Heaters: Traditional water heaters are generally less expensive upfront but can be costly to operate over time due to higher energy consumption. The inefficiency and potential for heat loss can lead to increased utility bills.
  • Energy-Efficient Eco-Friendly Heaters: While eco-friendly heaters may have higher initial costs, their energy efficiency can lead to substantial long-term savings. Reduced energy consumption means lower utility bills, potentially offsetting the higher upfront investment.

In summary, the latest energy-efficient, eco-friendly water heaters outperform old inefficient models regarding technology, energy efficiency, environmental impact, and long-term cost savings. Upgrading to an eco-friendly heater can help conserve energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and lower utility expenses.

Don’t Be Overwhelmed by “Going Green.”

How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. A homeowner can easily get overwhelmed when making your whole house green, so take it in easy steps. If budget is an issue, avoid going into significant debt to Go Green. Planning is everything; start by pricing out your water heater, or an on-demand or tankless water heater is preferred. If the cost is a major factor, then research storage tank heaters. When purchasing a water heater, always buy one with the Water Sense label because it will use 8% less energy than the standard heater.

The Benefits Of “Going Green” with Dishwasher and Washing Machine

Going Green with appliances

The latest energy-efficient, eco-friendly dishwashers and washing machines offer several benefits compared to older, less efficient models. Here are some advantages:

Energy Efficiency:

  • Energy-efficient dishwashers and washing machines are designed to use less energy during operation, which can result in significant cost savings and reduced environmental impact. They often feature advanced technologies like sensors, improved insulation, and efficient water circulation systems to optimize energy usage.

Water Conservation:

  • Eco-friendly appliances are designed to minimize water consumption. They use advanced water-saving techniques such as sensors and optimized spray patterns to clean dishes and laundry effectively while using less water. This not only helps conserve a valuable resource but also reduces water bills.

Reduced Detergent and Chemical Usage:

  • Modern eco-friendly appliances often feature improved cleaning mechanisms and technology, allowing them to clean effectively with lower detergent and chemical usage. This not only saves money on detergent but also reduces the release of chemicals into the environment.

Environmentally Friendly Materials:

  • Energy-efficient appliances are often built with environmentally friendly materials. They may use recycled or sustainable materials in their construction, reducing the overall environmental impact associated with manufacturing and disposal.

Advanced Features and Technology:

  • The latest eco-friendly dishwashers and washing machines come equipped with advanced features and technology that enhance performance and convenience. These may include programmable settings, smart connectivity, delayed start options, and specialized cycles for different types of fabrics or dishes.

Noise Reduction:

  • Many energy-efficient appliances incorporate noise-reduction technology, making them quieter during operation. This can be especially beneficial for open-concept living spaces or running appliances during nighttime hours.

Longevity and Reliability:

  • Eco-friendly appliances often prioritize durability and reliability. They are built with high-quality components and materials, designed to withstand frequent use, and offer extended lifespans. This can result in fewer repairs and replacements, saving money and reducing waste.

Energy Efficiency Labels and Incentives:

  • Energy-efficient appliances typically carry energy efficiency labels, such as ENERGY STAR ratings. These labels provide consumers with information on the appliance’s energy efficiency performance, making it easier to compare different models. Additionally, governments and utility companies often offer incentives and rebates for purchasing energy-efficient appliances, further reducing the cost of upgrading.

Overall, the latest energy-efficient, eco-friendly dishwashers and washing machines offer improved energy efficiency, water conservation, reduced chemical usage, advanced features, and a smaller environmental footprint. As a result, investing in these appliances saves money in the long run and contributes to a greener and more sustainable lifestyle.

There Are Many Advantages Of “Going Green”

Whether you decide to Go Green with your plumbing all at once or gradually as your appliances start to wear, you will reap the benefits of green plumbing. There are other advantages of Going Green that far exceed lower utility costs, and that’s the fact that our families are healthier with green plumbing. Green homes provide clean, filtered water to your family while conserving resources. It goes well beyond saving a buck on our utility bill.

Get Away From Plastic Bottles And Install A Whole-House Water Filtration System

Installing a whole-house water filtration system will provide clean drinking water and softer hair and skin for your family. In addition, it will stop those plastic water bottles from getting into the environment. Finally, a whole-house water filtration system will preserve your plumbing system and appliances. No more mineral deposits will be in your pipe or showerhead and fixtures.

Old Appliances Suck Energy

If budget is an issue, then start small and move up. For example, you can purchase a low-flow toilet for less than 200 dollars. For less than 30 bucks, you can get a top-of-the-line low-flow showerhead. Are you living in the dark ages when it comes to your appliances? Compared to the latest models, old appliances such as dishwashers and clothes washers suck water and electricity.

Install a home leak monitoring device to detect leaks. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), 10% of homes in the U.S. have water leaks that waste 90 gallons of water a day. Unfortunately, most homeowners don’t have a clue that they have a water leak. To Go Green, is a responsibility, and while most of us can’t go out and refit our homes, we can all make affordable minor changes to preserve our climate.

What People Are Saying...

I called Big B's Plumbing because I the hot water would not turn off in our master bathroom. I tried to turn the valve off under the sink and it broke off, so I had to shut off the main water to the house. It was noticeable the valves were original to the home. When I called, the rep stated that I would be informed about the service tech and their experience along with services offered "On The Spot". I was on a bit of a time crunch...

Found them on Google and they had good quality reviews. Made the call and set up the appointment for same day. Dispatch called me a few hours later to confirm our appointment and let me know that the technician Mathew was on the way. This was supposed to be an easy job once Mathew arrived. But it turned out to be so much more than that. Without hesitation or a sour look on his face, he dove deep into his van...
